  1. I’m an early career attending IR and reading your “why I quit my post” sounds exactly like I wrote it myself in an alternate universe.

The problems you describe with IR/DR jobs are near universal. I took the job with 3-4 other young IR grads and we all feel the same frustrations. My job pays relatively well but I can’t help but feel totally demoralized by my work given that everything I like doing is considered a project or taking up too much room time, even though they said all the right things about building up a clinical service when I interviewed. It’s a rude awakening to say the least cuz I can feel the golden handcuffs tightening and the dream of an OBL life slipping away.

I hope to be able to have enough saved up in the next year or so to leave my current job and try to go it alone. I read everything I can on the subject but it still seems very daunting.

Thanks for the blog and let me know if there’s any way I can talk to you further about your experience.

    1. Thanks so much for the comment. You’re clearly not alone. I’d venture to say there are hundreds of us early career folks out here feeling the same way. There is no community for us really and that is what I’m trying to create here. I sent you an email. Please reach out and let’s chat. I’d love to do what I can to support you.

  2. Hello and thank you so much for this blog. Your posts and other sources of information have been an essential source of information. I am an M4 planning on pursuing IR, but I have some questions about what the day to day actually looks like in someone practicing “clinical” IR to its full potential, as it stands in today’s climate.

Do people have actual clinic days or are appointments squeezed in between cases? Are consults typically 5 minute telemed calls or real appointments? Are follow-ups usually done by mid-levels? Are IR’s in this setting still taking call? Of available IR jobs, what percent are actually like this? I know this greatly varies by practice, but would greatly appreciate your insight on this and more.

    1. Sorry for the delayed response. These are great questions. Please reach out to me via email (linemonkeymd@gmail.com). I’d love to chat with you. I’ll dedicate a post to this as well.
